The Chatham Cup was presented to the NZFA on the 14th December 1922, by the crew of the HMS Chatham. The trophy design was based on England's FA Cup and cost 75 pounds (about $15 000 in today's money). It was paid for by the ship's crew as a thank you to the people of New Zealand for the warm welcome they had been given in their time in NZ
It has been contested every year since 1923 with the exception of 1937 (insufficient entries) and 1941-44 (due to war). Seacliff Mental Hospital from Dunedin were the first winners of the cup. Christchurch United, North Shore United & Eastern Suburbs have each won the cup 6 times. Mt Wellington may claim they have the most wins with 7, but 2 of these came after they merged with University and became known as University-Mt Wellington.
