I still
have not got used to the names of the teams in the ASB National
Women's League. I'm not sure why, in the old days, before NZ Football
created 7 federations, this would have been Wellington v Canterbury,
something that felt as if it had a bit of meaning to it.
However
to say that this game had no meaning to it would be a great
dis-service to the players, who were definitely playing like this game had some meaning. And, I wasn't aware until after the game, there was a trophy, the Peter Oosten Memorial Cup, at stake.
Mainland
are the defending national champions and had 2 wins from 2 games so
far this season. Capital were still looking for their 1st
win. Mainland looked like a team
that was defending the championship and looked as if they would
dominate the game and early on had the ball in the Capital net from a free kick, only for it to be ruled offside. Capital obviously had different ideas and a were a much
improved team on the one I saw 2 weeks previously. They seemed a lot
more organised and were talking a lot more and weren't allowing Mainland to settle.
Both
teams had their chances and it could easily have been 2-2 at half
time. Instead it was 0-0 and unfortunately I had to go to work so I
missed the second half and both Mainland's goals.
I did
take a few photo's though. The quality isn't great as I don't have a
proper camera yet.
Where I have
names hopefully they are correct. NZ Football helpful publish an electronic squad list before the games, but some teams (especially
Capital) never seem to keep to the list!!! Let me know if there are any wrong or who the unnamed players are.

Hi Dave,
ReplyDeleteNice meeting you at the Kelly cup game yesterday. I can help you with names...Number 11 is Maggie Jenkins. The next photo down is Lena De Ronde, the one after is Michaela Robertson, but the 4th photo is actually Jamie Lee Hunt. I hope you don't mind me correcting you.
Kind regards,
Rosa
