ASB Premiership - Week 13

The week started with top v bottom, and the questions were being asked would Auckland City put 10 past Southern United like they did in 2014? they didn't it was only 4 that Auckland City managed as they won their 3rd “minor” premiership in a row (their 7th overall) and with it qualification to the 2017 O-League.

Saturday saw WaiBOP United play their last ever home game, they played at Mt Maunganui's Links Avenue and won 4-2. Click here for a good write up of the game

On Sunday Hawke's Bay United got a vital 2-0 away win against Team Wellington which puts them into 2nd place. 2nd place not only gets a home semi-final, but if Auckland win the Grand Final, 2nd place qualifies for the O-League.

Here are the highlights

Goal of the week – Sean Morris's opening goal for WaiBOP United (and it wasn't influenced by the classic commentary – Booooom!)

Beer League

Southern United – Emerson's 1812 Hoppy Pale Ale (5%) 2
Auckland City – Epic Brooklyn IPA (6.4%) 2

Emerson's again, not that I'm complaining its a great brewery but Regional wines and spirits which is supposed to be the holy grail for Wellington drinkers does have a limited range and supermarkets, even New World in Thorndon seem to stay to the same breweries. Anyway the 1812 Hoppy Pale Ale is what it says on the label its a hoppy pale ale and very drinkable. The Epic Brooklyn is a new strain of hops which have been developed especially for the NZ/USA IPA style, they were good but probably need to be put with others to get a really good beer.

WaiBOP United – Rocky Knob Hop Knob IPA (6%)
Wellington Phoenix –
Baylands Brewery Woodrow's Veto IPA (7%) 3

As WaiBOP United were playing in Mt Maunganui I thought I'd try a beer that came from there. Hop Knob IPA from the Rocky Knob Brewery was nice, it was the sort of beer that had it been in the 1990s people would have been raving about it, but these days it's just OK.

Bayland's Brewery, which started in a garage on Bayland's Drive in Newlands and has now moved to Petone, make this full bodied malty IPA named Woodrow's Veto. The name is in honour of US President Woodrow Wilson who tried unsuccessfully to veto the prohibition bill.
