ISPS HANDA PREMIERSHIP FANS PREVIEW - PART 1

Football in NZ is unusual, while the Wellington Phoenix play in Australia's A-League and have the longest off-season in the world. The fans like myself have one of the shortest. The NZ Winter season finished a month ago with the Chatham Cup Final, but now we have the Summer season kicking off this weekend with the three National Leagues, the Men's women's and men's youth league.

The Men's National League has a new sponsor and will be known as the ISPS Handa Premiership (which has already been abbreviated to "The Handy" by fans.

The first game is the Charity Cup (oh and it also counts as a round 8 game as Auckland City will be away at the Club World Cup then) between last years Champions and the premiers.

Team Wellington v Auckland City
Kick off is at 2pm
Sunday 15th October
Dave Farrington Park, Wellington

To celebrate this, I have asked fans of each club some questions about last season and the season to come as well as some generic ones (who'll come last etc) and I will be bringing these to you over the next three days.
So here you go with Part 1 of the fans preview
=====================================================================================
Last Season : Won the premiership, but lost the Grand Final to Team Wellington
Fan : John Palethorpe

Best Moment of last season

The sheer insouciance of Joao Moreira's flick and finish against Team Wellington. The big man turned Bill Robertson to stone and pushed the ball past Scott Basalaj like a kid playing world cup singles around the garages with his mates.

Worst Moment of last season

The Super City Derby where we utterly melted down. Three players given their marching orders (with no complaints about Tavano and White's dismissals), Zubikarai trying to catch the sun and losing both games against W**takere that season.

What did you Liked \ Disliked about last season?

Liked : The new clubs certainly brought some energy to the competition.
My pick of the new kids was Tasman who were excellent hosts when we visited them in January.

Disliked : What sort of league doesn't prioritise goal difference for placing? As much as I was delighted to finish first, the prospect of Team Wellington trying to bang a few more past Canterbury on the final day of the season would have been good viewing.

How will you do this season?

Up there. I think Team Wellington are going to run us close again this season, but I'm pretty sure we can hang on to top spot. Then again I was pretty sure we'd beat W**tak last season. The uncertainty is appealing

Player to watch

Emilano Tade is a handful of goals away from Allan Pearce's NZFC record with Aaron Clapham hot on his heels. I suspect he'll be trying to grab the golden boot and the record this year.

 What song best sums up your club?

Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone

HAPPY WITH THE COACH

70% of respondents said they were happy with their teams choice of coach,
20% weren't sure, while 10% (OK 1)  wasn't happy
won't give away any names but a look towards the bottom of last years table will probably get you guessing correctly!

Last Season : Won the Championship for second year in a row
Fan : Tracey Hodge

Best Moment of last season

It's a tie between the Semi Final v Waitakere (won on pens after a 6-6 draw) and
another Grand Final win over Auckland City.
Superfan Tracey joins in Team Wellington's semi final winning celebrations

How will you do this season?

I am expecting a top two finish,
will have to see how the first few games go before making any bolder predictions

Player to watch

Joel Stevens

What song best sums up your club?

In honour of our coach it has to be Dionne Warwick's "Do you know the way to San Jose"

THE MOST POPULAR COACHES

Asked if their current coach left and they had to choose one from another Handy premiership team - these were the results

1 = Jose Figuera (Team Wellington) 40%
1 = Ramon Tribulitex (Auckland City) 40%
3 = Davor Tavich (Tasman United) 10%
4 = Chris Milicich (Waitakere United) 10%

Last Season : 9th
Fan : Grant Stantiall

Best Moment of last season

The 4-0 home win over Eastern Suburbs

Worst Moment of last season

Losing to the Phoenix U20 at Waikato Stadium was bloody awful to watch

What did you Liked \ Disliked about last season?

Like that there is a Waikato entry in the competition
but I dislike the fact they are only really making up the numbers

How will you do this season?

Not Sure

  Player to watch

Going local, Michael Built, coming back from an injury but he is a Wanderers player through and through. Highly skilled and can score

What song best sums up your club?

Joe Walsh's Ordinary average guy
